Combining Petrology and Seismology to Unravel the Plumbing System of a Typical Arc Volcano: An Example From Marapi, West Sumatra, Indonesia

Marapi in Sumatra is characterized by frequent short-lived explosions and small eruptions (Volcanic Explosivity Index 1–2) the past 250 years, volcano has erupted >60 times. Recent volcanic bombs presence of broadband seismic stations lead us to reconstruct plumbing system through an interdisciplinary study. A petrologic study summit uses pyroxene, plagioclase glass compositions obtain pressures temperatures magma storage as well identify pre-eruptive processes. Two-pyroxene geothermobarometry provides crystallization pressure estimates 4–7 kbar (∼15–26 km). Compositional textural analyses pyroxene crystals indicate that mafic recharge was followed mixing with resident renewed prior eruption. In order further image reservoir, we performed a joint inversion teleseismic receiver functions surface waves (H/V ratio). The reveals low velocity zone (LVZ) at depths 15–21 km 7 ± 3% shear reduction, corresponding estimated melt fraction 5 2%. depth this LVZ overlaps from petrology, constraining it high confidence. Such combined valuable information for evaluating future periods unrest, laying out framework interpretation incoming monitoring data signals look improve eruption forecasts.
